One of the most common questions I get is what should my senior wear to a photo shoot? Its so fun to go pick out the latest and greatest trends, but its also important to pick out the casual, timeless looks as well!

  1. At a minimum, pick three diverse outfits

Follow the three T’s- Trendy, Timeless and true to you. For one of your outfits, chose something that is trendy. Include fun accessories and be bold with your outfit. With your next outfit, chose something that will stand the test of time. Try something nuetral, something that accentuates you but does not stand out on its own. Also, make sure to include an outfit that is all about you. Something that reflects your personality, hobbies or interests.

2. Style your outfits from head to toe

Accessories, undergarments and shoes are the most overlooked item when people prepare for their senior shoot. Don’t forget to include the proper shoes, undergarments and jewelry / props that way you aren’t missing anything on the day of the shoot.

3. Play with Layers

Denim jackets, a blazer or a button down shirt can really pull your outfit together!

3. Wear clothes you feel confident it

Stay away from outfits that don’t make you feel comfortable or are super high maintenance. Chose clothes that really accentuate your personality!

4. Dress for the Season / Weather

If its snowing, there is nothing that looks goofier than shorts and a tank top! Make sure you dress for the weather!

5. Avoid the color red and any color that has ever appeared on a highlighter, especially if you are using nature! Highlighter colors, or neon colors often don’t blend well with surroundings and can reflect on your face and skin giving you the appearance of that specific color.

6. Wear your Glasses, but avoid these common mistakes

If you wear glasses, you should wear them for your photo shoot. However, try taking out your lenses for the shoot to avoid camera glare. Also, avoid transition lenses at your photo shoot. These cannot be edited easily.

7. Make sure your outfit looks just as good if your sitting, standing or kneeling.

I will photograph you in several different poses in each outfit, and you want to chose outfits that are flattering from each angle.

8. Stay away from spaghetti straps and strapless outfits

We all love those summery dresses with spaghetti straps, but in photographs they often make your shoulders look wider than they are ad can make you look bigger. There isn’t always a way around it as far as posing, so try to find outfits that are either sleeveless or sleeved. Have an outfit with thin straps? try to dress it up with a shawl or jean jacket!

9. Bring all the gear

If you are going to wear a sports uniform, make sure to bring the equipment too such as a football, helmet, baseball etc.

10. Pick some Props

Props are not a must by any means, but some clients love them and go all out! Some fun things to bring are flower bouquets, college sweatshirts or uniforms, cap and gown, sports uniform, picnic baskets and blankets, vintage bicycles, etc.
