One very common question I get is “Can our dog be in our family photos?” My answer is always yes, I am a pet friendly photographer! I love dogs, and it’s always a beautiful idea to include your fur baby.
However, bringing a pet means there may be a few extra details to pin down while preparing for your photo shoot.
- Bring a family member, friend, or dog sitter
My number one tip is to make sure someone comes along to hold the leash throughout your session. Although I will take many photos of you and your dog, you’ll want a variety in your final gallery without your dog. Also, much like kiddos, your dog may need a break or two as well. This gives you a chance to relax and focus on the photos while your pup has some downtime
- Don’t forget to bring treats or a toy!
In order for me to get the attention I need, it might be helpful to bring treats or a squeaky toy. Plus, pups need to be rewarded for a good job, too!
- Consider a simple color and leash
Having a simple leash and color allows the attention to be on everyone, without bringing too much attention to a bulky colorful leash. With that said, safety should always come first, so if your dog requires a harness I recommend keeping them on a harness.
- Tire your dog out before the session
If you know your dog tends to have a lot of energy, try to wear them out before the session by going on a walk or playing a game of catch with them. It’s also helpful to come a little early to the session so your dog can get used to the location
- Confirm with your photographer ahead of time and be sure dogs are allowed at your location
Dogs are allowed at my indoor or outdoor sessions as long as the venue allows it. Its best to confirm with me before your session to be sure that dogs are allowed at the venue as its best to not be surprised.
- Dress your pup up!
Add some fun accessories like a bandana or bow tie or even a flower crown leash! These just add to the fun vibe do your session!
- Lastly, Regarding Newborn Sessions
It is extra important to read this section if your bringing your pup to a newborn session. Safety is at the very top of my priority list as it likely is yours too. Safety is 100% important, so it may not be best to put your pup and baby together if your dog tends to get overexcited.
